Indonesian urban legend story written in English. Granny Pakande who likes to eat human especially kids. It represents the old life of Soppengist villagers
Here’s the intro, I’ve ever joined a storytelling competition when I was in high school. We were asked to present a story from urban legend. 2 of my friends and I chose to tell a story about Granny Pakande.
It was an urban legend from my friend’s hometown. The story was short so that we made improvisation to some parts of story. It was all fun and game.
We played multiple characters, practiced every week. made the properties that we needed for our show. We didn’t use many properties because we were running out of time to prepare everything, and also we were honestly less creative.
That made us lose the competition. We were in the 4th row, we almost won. Almost was never enough tho. Here’s the story:

Granny Pakande
Once upon a time, there was a story from South Sulawesi. The place called Soppeng. The villagers lived with happiness, peaceful, and wealthy. Their main job was farming. One day Bacco visited Becce’s house and asked her to play outside the house. “Becce.. Becce.. Let’s play outside the house!”Bacco shouted from the main door. “Wait.. I’m coming!” Becce said. “Where are you going?”Her mother asked. “Well... I’m about to play outside the house” Becce replied. “Don’t go home late!” Her mother ordered. It was getting dark, the sun has left its place to shine, but the kids kept playing “Dol mika dol, mika dol eska, eska dol, eska dol, mia mia, sim sim...”Bacco sang while tosting his hand to Becce’s hand. “One..”Becce replied. “Two..” “Three..” “Four..” Suddenly there was a sound came from nowhere. “Hahahahaaaa” Someone laughed maniacly. “Who is that?”Becce asked to her friend. “I don’t know. I think it’s time for me to go home. Bye. See you later” Bacco replied while walking away from where they played in. “Hello there, little creature!” Someone said who was sounded closer to Becce. “Huh? Who are you?”Becce asked, looking very frightened. “I’m just a granny who has lots of candy. Do you mind helping me eating all these candies?” Granny offered sweetly. “Sure, I love candies!”Becce replied enthusiaticaly. “Follow me then!”. Becce was brought to Granny’s house. That night was the last time Bacco saw Becce. She never came home after that. Becce was found nowhere.
In the other day, there was a single mom who lived with her
newborn baby. Night came by. She left her baby alone in her room while she was
cooking in the kitchen. Granny sneaked into the house and took away the baby.
The baby was crying out loud so that her mom heard it and came to the room.
Unfortunately it was too late, the baby has gone. The day after that night, she
was looking for her baby in every possible place. “Farmer, do you see my baby?”
She asked to the farmers who were plowing the rice field. “No. You should ask
La Beddu. Granny Pakande probably kidnapped your baby” One of the farmers
suggested. “Oh noooo! My baby. My baby’s gone” The woman cried intensively
while running to La Beddu’s house, the farmers followed her. Knocked. Knocked.
Knocked. The door was knocked poundly. “What happened?” La Beddu asked. “My
baby. My sweet baby’s gone last night. Granny Pakande probably kidnapped her”
She answered with stumbling words. “It has to be her. I heard that Becce also
has dissappeared. Granny Pakande should pay the price” La Beddu stated angrily.
“Granny Pakande is a great magic stealth, and she’s only afraid of King Bangkung Pitu Reppa Rawo Ale. He’s a giant!”
one of the farmers informed. “I have an Idea!” La Beddu suggested with high
confidance. “What is it?” the woman and farmers asked at the same time. “Bring
me some turtles, eels, rakes, a dried bamboo shoot, a bucket of bubble soap,
and big rocks. Meet me here tonight” La Beddu ordered. “What are those for?”the
woman asked curiously. “I’ll explain it later. We have no much time. We need to
hurry” La Beddu said.
They were all searching for those things that La Beddu
asked. Night came along. They all gathered in La Beddu’s house, and set up the
traps. They were going to trick Granny Pakande to come to Sao Raja by putting a
baby alone in a room. A few minutes later, granny Pakande was getting into the
trap, when she was about to take the baby, suddenly a loud voice sound from
nowhere. “GRANNY PAKANDE! WHY DO YOU COME HERE?” La Beddu said who used a dried
bamboo shoot to make his voice sound very loud. “Who’s there?”, “I’M THE GIANT
KING BANGKUNG PITU REPPA RAWO ALE HAHAHAHA”. She felt a little bit afraid but
wasn’t sure if he was the real giant king. “What makes you think so?”. La Beddu
threw a bucket of bubble soap as the giant king’s saliva, then he threw the
rakes as the giant king's hair comb and turtles as the giant king's fleas at
the same time. Granny run away to the exit door, then she fell off because of
the eels and her head hit the big rocks. She was badly injured but it didn’t
stop her to keep running away and said “Someday I’ll come back to this village
to eat all of your children". People lived peacefully after that incident,
and her threaten will always be used by the villagers to warn their children
not to play outside the house at night.
Happy Living!
